Lord Duncan McNair
PR and Public Affairs Consultant
Lord McNair has a family tradition of concern for human rights. He was a Member of the House of Lords from 1990 to 1999. It was the involvement of his grandfather, Sir Arnold, later Lord, McNair with the diplomatic crisis of 1952 between Britain and Iran over the nationalisation of the oil industry, and the subsequent hearing at the International Court of Justice, that led him in 2015 to found Peaceful Planet Human Rights Education.
Sir Arnold was the British judge at the International Court of Justice from 1946 to 1955. He was one of the most prominent and influential public international lawyers of the 20th Century, ending his career as the Founding President of the European Court of Human Rights after pressing strongly for the establishment of a Court to uphold the European Convention on Human Rights.
Duncan's father, Lord John McNair was a delegate from the UK House of Lords to the Council of Europe. In 1983 he visited Palestine and helped to resolve the funding crisis at UNWRA which threatened the Palestinian refugee camps and he worked on the independence of many of Britiain’s small island colonies.
Lord Duncan McNair spoke in the House of Lords on health, international development and the environment and took a keen interest in humanitarian affairs and projects. He visited Sudan many times and led an educational project at the University of Khartoum. He was awarded the degree of Hon. D.Litt. by the University Senate.
Since leaving the House of Lords Duncan has worked as a PR and Public Affairs Consultant alongside his humanitarian work. Currently, he is developing peace and community building projects in Kurdistan of Iraq, Somalia and Ethiopia.
